The Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra was created in September 2002 by Antonio Vilardi, Artistic Director of the Théatre St. Michel, Clare Roberts and Roger Bausier. Its aim is to provide young conservatoire graduates with an opportunity to put their musical training into practice by playing in a permanent, full-sized symphony orchestra, and thus enhance their chances of becoming professional musicians. In an highly fruitful partnership with the Théatre St. Michel, the orchestra helps to compensate for the current lack of openings for young professionals caused by the gradual disappearance of large orchestras from the Belgian musical scene. The BPO has developed its own identity and is now firmly established as a recognised player in the artistic life of the country.
The BPO’s concerts cover the major works of the classical repertoire as well as more modern ones, with a particular emphasis on Belgian composers. The orchestra has regular rehearsals once a week, and comprises a hundred talented young musicians, as well as a number of seasoned professionals, all of whom are conducted by the BPO’s efficient and dynamic Musical Director, Roger Bausier, a professor at the Royal Brussels Conservatoire. The orchestra also promotes the careers of young Belgian soloists by giving them an opportunity of playing with a large established orchestra. Thanks to the invaluable support of the Théâtre St. Michel, the BPO gives three of four major concerts in the theatre each year as part of the “Music in St. Michel” season. The orchestra has enhanced its reputation by being chosen to take part in high profile events such as the annual concerts celebrating the signature of the Treaty of Rome and International Children’s Rights Day, as well as the Royal Brussels Conservatoire’s conducting competition. The BPO is hired regularly for charity concerts and events. The BPO has appeared with internationally renowned soloists in venues such as the Palais des Beaux Arts and the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels, the Concertgebouw in Bruges, the Kursaal in Oostende, the Nouveau Siècle in Lille and the Palais des Congrès in Paris. In october 2007 the BPO was chosen for thr openingconcert of the “COFENA” – cycle in the prestigious Queen Elisabethhall in Antwerpen The members of the BPO hail from twenty three countries and four continents, with a strong Belgian contingent drawn from all three regions and both linguistic entities. They are brought together by their love of music and their belief in its power to foster peace and harmony between peoples and communities. The BPO is always willing to consider proposals for future performance opportunities, whether as a full orchestra or in smaller formations, for official events or for private functions organised by corporations, societies etc., and is keen to bring its message of social and cultural progress to a wider audience. | 15-04-2009 |
