The programme for this concert marks the world premiere of the Concerto for Piano composed by Cyril Orcel.

The concert will open with a dynamic overture, also written by a Belgian composer, Frédéric Devreese. He is well-known for his film music, but has also written works in all different musical genres; opera, ballet, chamber music, symphonies and music for voice and instrumental works.

Cyril Orcel was born in Toulouse and now lives in Brussels, and this will be the first time he will hear his concerto for piano performed in a concert.

The popular “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff is based around 24 of the 46 medieval poems discovered in the 19th Century in the Benedictine Monastry of Benediktbeuern in Bavaria in Southern Germany. The libretto of this work is split into five sections and covers the following themes: power, “fortune” and money, the return of “spring” rendez-vous in “taverns”, erotic games and amorous pleasures.

It is presumed that the composer found inspiration among the Renaissance composers (Byrd, Monteverdi) and certain passages are even reminiscent of Stravinsky. The orchestration of “Carmina Burana” is rhythmical and harmonically simplistic.

For this programme, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra has the pleasure once again to perform with the Brussels Choral Society, an ensemble with whom they have performed numerous successful concerts in the past.

The roles of piano soloist and conductor will be awarded to French musicians.
