Organiser :

This concert is part of a charity tradition in Ostend. Its programme is traditional yet festive. The works performed have been chosen for their popularity and their sometimes seriousness of nature.

The concert will open with a work by a Belgian composer, Dirk Brossé of Gent, who also composed works in a range of different genres: vocal, instrumental, chamber, symphonic, film and theatre music. His ‘Millennium’ Overture was commissioned by Microsoft and composed in celebration of the importance of high-speed telecommunications in the modern world, in order to provide a positive image of a future world in which music will triumph over technology.

The “waltz” extract from the 8th Symphony is typical of Dvorak’s style; upbeat and familiar his music breaths a certain energy and “joie de vivre”.

The piece by Camille Saint-Saëns was written for the famous violinist Pablo de Sarasate and has a Spanish influence. The work enables the soloist to explore every register of their instrument.

The Hungarian Dances by Brahms are the product of a tour that he made of Germany with the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi, who introduced him to upbeat gypsy music.

The piece entitled ‘Rikudim’, written by our fellow compatriot Jan Van der Roost is a dance of four movements inspired by Jewish folklore.

La Gazza Ladra, “The Thieving Magpie” in English, is the overture from Guiseppe ROSSINI’s opera which recounts the misadventure of the servant Ninette who, after having married the son of her master, is accused of stealing a spoon bearing his initials.

‘Greensleeves’ is attributed to King Henri 8th of England and this traditional English song addresses a lady wearing “green sleeves”.

In comparison to concerts that were performed at the time this music was written, the audience will be carried away by the traditional waltzes and polkas of Johan Strauss Jr and the performance will finish with his beautiful Blue Danube Waltz.

The soloist will be the talented young violinist from China, Lei Wang.
